March News, Notes & Happenings from Waikiki Beach Walk

March 09, 2023

Become immersed in community and culture at Waikiki Beach Walk, the vibrant shopping, dining and entertainment district at Lewers Street and Kalākaua Ave. Waikiki Beach Walk is committed to sharing the traditions of Hawaiʻi through song, dance and outstanding, locally owned stores and restaurants.

MENEHUNE ON THE MOVE!

Menehune statue holding lei and fish. Some of Hawaii’s most beloved moʻolelo (stories) involve the Menehune, a group of small people who lived hidden in the forests and valleys of the islands before Hawaiʻi was settled by Polynesians. They were said to be a mischievous bunch who roamed unseen at night. They were extremely smart, strong, industrious, and superb builders, credited with mighty feats of overnight engineering and construction of heiau (sacred Hawaiian temples), fishponds, roads, canoes and houses.

Paying tribute to Hawaii’s legend of the menehune, three characters arrived at Waikiki Beach Walk last spring, delighting both visitors and residents alike.

The trio is now sporting new seasonal attire and have been joined by a puaʻa (pig) and moa (chickens). They were created by craftsman Owen Ho, the designer who masterminds most of the Honolulu City Lights figures.
